Online gambling was legalized in Michigan after Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a gambling expansion package on December 20, 2019. The first online casinos began operating in the Wolverine State on January 22, 2021. This gave residents and visitors access to the same type of online casino games as those offered in states like New Jersey and Nevada.

In total, nine online casinos and ten online sportsbooks were launched in Michigan on day one, which has gone down in history as the largest synchronized launch of online gambling platforms in the United States.

Michigan’s online gambling model is based on that of New Jersey, a state where online gambling has been particularly successful. However, Michigan’s online gambling regulations differ from most states with the inclusion of tribal casinos. Only three commercial casinos are found in Michigan and are all located in the city of Detroit. 

Michigan is also home to 12 tribes that operate a total of 23 casinos.
